The Managing Director, Murray Steward, formed Seabase in 1984. A keen surfer since 1963, a traveller and teacher, he left New Zealand in 1973 to surf Jeffrey's Bay and the legendary Cape St Francis. Political difficulties led to a move to England and after travelling throughout Europe, he has never looked back.

His interest in chemistry led to the modification of Isophthalic Resins to produce a stronger, clearer surfboard resin, which was to see the beginning of Seabase Limited.

Based in the beautiful coastal town of Newquay in England, the company grew quickly, and was successful in the marine industry to begin with, before specialising more recently in the surfboard industry. The company went from strength to strength, opening Seabase Limited (France) in Hossegor, France, to cope with overseas demand.

The French operation is managed extremely professionally by Jean-Luc Merle, a multi-lingual, degree-qualified surfer with a love of the sport. Jean-Luc is extremely well respected in the industry in France for both his surfing and his mature sensible approach to the business. He personifies the ethics Seabase has a reputation for throughout Europe.
